How much sea time do I need to get my 6PAK?

You need 360 days of operating a vessel, 90 of which must have been in the last 3 years (recency requirement).

Suppose I have time using someone else’s boat or don’t know the numbers on my old vessel.?

Your state’s DNR will send you a list of all vessels that you have owned.

Can I use military time?

Yes, but you will need to request your sea service records from the branch you served. For example, if you served in the USCG you have to request a Transcript of Sea Service from the USCG Personnel Command. 

How do I show my sea service?

There US Coast Guard uses form 719s which can be found here – US Coast Guard Forms.

What other qualifications are required?

You need a recent Physical (USCG Form 719K), Clean DOT 5 drug test (USCG Form 719P), USCG Approved CPR/1st Aid card, and a Transportation Workers Identification Card. We assist all students with their applications to the US Coast Guard.

Do I have to go to CG REC?

No. All applications can (and should be) submitted electronically through email. We assist all students with the application process. 

Does a criminal record keep me from getting a license?

Usually no, as it depends on the severity and age of convictions. Tell the truth, no fudging as you will get caught!

How do I go about the required drug test?

Almost any doctor can collect the sample, but only approved labs can analyze the sample and then only required drugs.
